That it seems the external agent, what is known as \"spiritual friend\", can also activate internal agents, which is the buddha nature, so that we find that we can able to overcome confusion into wisdom. Spiritual friend is regarded as teacher, elder, at the hinayana level. And then the spiritual friend is regarded as spiritual friend in the mahayana level -- often guide, pointer, and good friend. Which is related with-- it depends on the internal agent of buddha nature as woken up. How much is woken up, how much it has been developed further. So that much communication is taking place, by making the fundamental breakthrough -- your shell, your resistance. That now we find that spiritual friend, when person is further evolved, in other word, the buddha nature is begin to extend itself and glorify itself, within. The spiritual friend begin to take a *further* shape in helping us to expand our internal agent and its force, which is the basic buddha nature. And the person begin to see the spiritual friend as a greater leader than purely spiritual friend. Which is depicted that way; the Buddha, in vajrayana sense is depicted that way. But you begin to realize there greater connection can be made, at that level. That greater bondage-- the reason why there is greater bondage is because once you relate your spiritual friend as king, that you begin to realize that the very ground you are sitting on, and the very air you are breathing, and the very existence of food, clothings, everything that you have, the livelihood and whole thing is part of that kingdom. So, therefore you don't feel separate situations in the bodhisattva level, in the spiritual friend level, in early part of the situation, where you think you are standing on nobody's ground, or somebody's ground; the earth is owned by somebody else, and you are really mainly walking on it, and you made friends with somebody who is good -- good guy, and you feel comradeship that way because the rest of the sky and the earth is not really part of you, that you are looking for a good friend and looking for all over, you found a good one. And in this case whole thing completely flips, that we begin to realize that, in fact we don't have to be all that *hungry* or *thirsty* to make a friend with a spiritual friend, particularly, but we have to accept ourselves being sandwiched between the kingdom of the sky and the kingdom of earth -- both are connected with that particular king. Because for the very reason that you had to trust in your innate goodness of the buddha mind, and because of that you had innate trust in your spiritual friend. And because whole thing's blown and extended-- expanded that way, to the greater extent. So one begin to feel larger -- obviously [laughing] some people feel very small. It seems that that's some kind of birth of compassion of some kind, on the student's part. And yet at the same time it seems we don't talk about compassion very much in vajrayana. All of that--\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: But, we could say is birth of fearlessness. That you don't feel you are just a baby left in the middle of a desert, who is without a spiritual friend. And the some sense of fearlessness begin to develop. Which is gentleness to oneself. In the vajrayana we don't talk about compassion as such, in the mahayana level. But in the vajrayana we talk in terms of compassion in the level of \"passion\". We take out the “com” part of it -- just the \"passion\". And that passion is reality, that you actually have appreciation of world as it is, even the passionate level.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: So in some way other people become more real?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Including yourself. And one phrase I remember that you used in one of your books was \"ultimate disappointment\" is being what enlightenment is. And it seems like the other night, the talk was on the \"Brilliant Sun of Enlightenment\".  [Public Talk, Sept 16th 1978] And I just kind of wondered how the ultimate disappointment becomes the brilliant sun.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, it's very simple. The ultimate disappointment is that you have to give up the shadows, the hidden corners, little shadows, little sun shades. And when you give that up, you're so disappointed you can't even wear a sunshine-- sun shade. And you have to see the brilliant sun of enlightenment sooner or later. To some people it could be bad news, because they always like to curl up in a corner, in the shade. Which they regard as cool and gentle but in fact it's full of smell, and infection. Leprosy. So, somebody has to give up that in order to do good for you. What we are saying is trying to help yourself.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER5: One other thing. What happens to suffering along the way, the first noble truth?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: That goes all along. In the same way that we might watch cinema, and you like the visual activities, and there's also soundtracks going on behind it as well. So the suffering part is the soundtrack and the visual part is your actual discipline that goes on all the time. I'm afraid that doesn't go away. But that doesn't particularly become depressing, per se. It becomes a *real* suffering, opposed to sneaking suffering, or hypocritical suffering, or psychosomatic suffering. You talk a lot about personal-- a close personal relationship between spiritual friend and other person, and I'm having a problem seeing how a close personal relationship goes on, if we're only able to see you very little. Cause I'm getting the idea that -- at first anyway -- that has to do with some human contact. Is that true?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Yes. That's what we're doing right now. [Laughter] We have a human contact. And also there are other humans who can contact you too. Which are the concept of sangha. That when the teachings transmitted to individuals, that individuals also carry that particular germ of wakefulness. And that germ can be transmitted very simply, straightforward. As much as the negative germ can be transmitted. You caught flu from somebody, so you get it in a full scale. If you caught crab from somebody [laughter], you catch crab in the full scale. And still in the full scale. And that is the analogy, actually. And it could happen, it is been happening actually in quite some time.
