And at the same time, devotional is also further greater interest into the totality of energy that has occurred in the life situation. That the teaching actually shows us the way how things as they are and why things as they are and how to perceive into that particular situation, how to experience into that situation. That the teachings begin to show us the style and also gives us the eyes to look at. So that is to say that acquiring the sight of prajna and also acquiring the energy of compassion. So that we begin to feel that we are living in a larger world than world that we think we are in. In this case, larger world does not necessarily have to be a cosmopolitan, particularly, but a larger world in the sense that every aspect of life, pain, pleasure, good, and bad, everything is included. In other word, one is not just behaving like a petrified rat. But heroism here is just a sort of pure hundred percent celebration without a particular fight is involved. There is immense sense of softness and gentleness. That particular type of gentleness become very powerful, because there is no rest for the ego indulgency [sic] anymore. Which is to say that combining the cynical attitude as well as the devotion are brought together. That you see the tricks that might played on you by the confused energy. That you also see through that, at the same time, that you have greater strength inherited by the lineage inspiration at the same time. Or is it always a matter of looking under the skirts of the situation? And can you go too far [laughter] in seeing through the situations, particularly when they involve objects that seem to demand respect, solemnity, devotion in that heavy sense?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, what you mean by \"solemnity\"?\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER1: Well, the kind of respect one is taught to show for a principal, when-- you know, when you're in school. That kind of thing of behaving respectfully in front of the teacher. And again, in the heavy sense of not speaking, standing up when he comes into the room, paying attention to his every word, laughing when he tells a joke. [Laughter] That sort of thing. [Laughter] Or let-- what you call \"bootlicking\" too is a delightful part of it all from some points of view.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, I think, solemnity in a sense of dignity, of course, but not in the sense of basically bewildered. That as if you are in the front of a dangerous animal, that if you made a wrong move it might jump on you. [Laughter] So the best way to solve that problem is not to do anything at all or go along with it. And somehow that is, in fact, is signs of great barrier rather than great [laughs] communication. And nothing is happening there, just purely guesswork on your part. And just going along with it is not because you would like to, but you're afraid to make mistakes. And that kind of is based on non-heroic, unenlightened and not being able to get into the teachings. So, since you do not know the teachings, so you're trying to behave like as if you knew something, which is partially trying to con the teacher and partially trying to just make yourself a noteworthy person kind of thing, which is different. But, I think, other than that, there is a kind of sense of a heaviness that you feel with the devotion obviously, a sense of that as if you are suddenly in the presence of solid air. That's okay.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER1: Mhmm.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: And you can then feel the very delicate temperature there. You can go along with the-- when the atmosphere turn into light, you could go along with it; when atmosphere turn into solemn, you could along with it. So there's no problem with that.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER1: Uh huh. And I just wonder if you could say a few words about how does one go about overcoming fear? Which seems to be a great barrier.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, I don't think you should overcome fear particularly. The idea of overcoming fear is already somewhat a bad move. That one should joined fear rather than overcome. That the fear becomes a part of *you*. So, then, you conquer the enemy of that the threatening aspect of the fear becomes energy naturally. I think, question of when fear is being labeled as \"fear,\" then it worsens its situation, and you're trying to put further, greater validity to it, and it becomes more threatening. That heroism does not necessarily mean that somebody doesn't have fear particularly. Maybe the heroes does-- do they-- they do have fear. They probably are petrified, but they learn how to work with it; they can celebrate with the fear. That according to the ancient law, that the warrior is supposed to have a very intelligent fear, and the warriors must be partially coward. Otherwise, you end up sacrificing yourself unnecessarily than overcoming enemy. So you have to know when to retreat and when to pounce. That's very important. [Laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER2: It's very difficult. [laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, I think, the first thing is you have to try and then see what happens. And we can't just theorize first. But first they have to have some kind of experience. It's like tasting food. If you don't want to take a sip, you have to at least dip your finger in it and then taste it.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER2: Yeah, it's... a fear somehow seems to be so closely related to ego. But, somehow, if one is egoless, then you must almost by definition be fearless. I-- or that's my...\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Not necessarily. Well, maybe just to experience what the fearless is first-- or fear first. So fear comes fearlessness. If you have to-- you have to experience fear first in order to experience the fearlessness. And you mentioned something about the prajna of knowing as sort of being a atmosphere where-- or an environment. And you used the story of how birds use this atmosphere to heal themselves or find the right type of food to eat when they're sick. Is this also the birth-ground of a sense of humor when--\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Very much so.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: -- in dealing with cynicism?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Yeah, very much so. Well, there seem to be two types of cynicism. One is that basically uptight, so you be a cynic and cutting down everything. And one is that somewhat humorous but lighthearted, and somewhat stupid. That making fool of everything that come along. And, then, there is maybe a third type of cynical attitude, [laughs] which is understanding the situation and seeing its foolishness as well as its wisdom in it at the same time. Like the-- a lot of stories of Zen masters and that the story of Mullah Nasreddin that's been written.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: Who? [Laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Mullah.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: Mullah?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Yeah.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: Oh. The Sufi?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Yeah.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: [laughs] So you're not actually-- you said not to take this thing too seriously. So, in one respect, this isn't actually being introduced as a technique or--\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: I hope not, good heavens. And is there something about the prajna of knowing that can distinguish between different types of fear? Maybe one fear being just a general sense of panic that is kind of undermining our existence as you said. And another fear that maybe is legitimately some-- something coming from the situation that is telling you that you're off-base somehow; you're headed in the wrong direction. And that seems to be really important to distinguish between those in order to know when to pounce and when to retreat. Is there some sort of distinction between those or between fear?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: I suppose so. It's a question of it's not really fear particularly, it's a level of stupidity, [laughs] level of uncertainty. [unknown gesture or incident;  laughter; laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nIt's a question of you make mistake first, and then you feel fearful afterwards. It's like stepping on the dog shit first, which is a very naive thing to do; and the beginning, you're just bewildered. And, then, after that feeling bad about it and uptight about that. I think it's more than just anger or aggression. It's just fear particularly. It's just basic stupidity that one does that.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER5: But there's no shortcut. You just have to--\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: There's what?\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER5: There's no shortcut. You just have to step in it and learn, and next time you know a little better.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, I mean, each time when you do that, you learn, obviously. The next time you be more aware of not stepping on the dog shit, and you learn slowly, you know, everybody does. [Laughter]\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER5: I didn't hear that last part.
