And some of us here are quite energetic and able to cheer themselves up. [Laughter] Well this place used to be quite wild and stubborn, individuals were that way as well as their reflection on the place. And so far, Karme Choling situation has never been bored, boredom situation, and that has a lot of side effect on the establishment here and the place itself. And there is always next time to look forward, or some particular kind of events. So there has been too many entertainments taking place. And this place is a monastic situation, from the point of view of discipline and boredom; that the relationship to day-to-day practice situation had to be part of the energy, rather than any particular events, such as like this one. So when we are able to relate with the day-to-day living situation and practice schedules and study sessions and everything, when they become core of our existence, then obviously there will be some kind of boredom, but that boredom becomes intelligent boredom. So obviously we operate ourselves in a three-wheel principle: wheel of action, wheel of study, and wheel of meditation.\r\n\r\n\r\nSo I think that's it. I think work should be boredom.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER2: Work should be a problem?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Boredom.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER2: Boredom.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: [Laughs] And if you look forward to the next event, that takes away the actually the being here -- you are somewhere else.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER2: But it seems like there's so much work that it doesn't get boring.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, if you work hard enough, you'll find very boring, [laughter] if you pay attention to what you're doing. You see, work is not so much of trying to achieve anything but just to work. And so I've been here a long time, and there's always that sense, \"Rinpoche's coming\" and \"Rinpoche's coming.\" But I notice this time that it-- only until about two weeks before you actually arrived did the fever actually begin. And before that, sure, there's some kind of reference point, \"Rinpoche's coming in September.\" If people are going to leave, they wait until that time and so on, but it doesn't actually begin to permeate the day-to-day boredom, which I think is there. I think it's there.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Mhmm.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: And then about two weeks before you come, Michael gets up and starts announcing that we have to clean the house [laughter] and there's some sense of, you know, we begin to get excited about the fact the visit is coming.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Yeah. [Laughs; laughter] Well you-- hopefully you could keep it that way, two weeks is not too bad. [Laughter; laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: But two weeks is enough, so that by the time you arrive, everything's at a fever pitch and everybody's been working like crazy.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well probably they may not be all that kind of let down after I have gone, if the excitement begun only two weeks.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: Yeah, I think there's plenty -- well one problem is I heard that you're only-- you're coming back in a year, is that right?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, [laughs; laughter] you should keep it that way.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: Well I-- I'm worried about that.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: [Laughs] Then you'll get a chance to get bored in the meantime.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: I think people will be bored very soon after you leave.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, we'll see. I hope so. [Laughs]\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER3: You know, it's not so much the boredom of that there's nothing to do, but it's that everybody's situation is so familiar to themselves. Or do you see specific changes?\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well the boredom is just a basic monastic existence sort of situation. That you have sense of structure, breakfast, lunch, dinner, as well as sitting practices. That things are somewhat predictable, but at the same time, requires a lot of exertion, pushing, and so that you be actually practicing and you be eating in time, and that kind of situation.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER4: So for that to develop fully, just depends on us relating to the situation as it is right now.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: Well, some appreciation of everything we are doing, rather than that your mind is preoccupied with something else in the meantime. Well the question is, is being on the spot creates some kind of boredom and also some kind of sense of precision at the same time as well. So you are in contact with what you are doing. I think there is a general tendency of a setting sun approach, of you only live for what might happen to you, but you don't live for what you have. And that's why the whole industry of entertainment world is developed. The question is, I think the development of Karme Choling is based on that, and we had a lot of struggles in putting four columns inside the shrine hall, as we are not particularly trying to create the Tibetan style or Japanese style or Chinese style shrine hall architectural design altogether, but we trying to have some sort of basic Great Eastern Sun principle, and so as the people who are occupying it. And we had to struggle for it, and [laughing] we finally managed to put four columns. But that is more than four columns -- it's a question of how to establish connection. That how to join heaven and earth together so that there will be enlightened society.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe basic vision of Karme Choling's lifestyle and existence is based on Shambhala vision, definitely, whether consciously or unconsciously. And I will say that people should still continue in that way. And one of the characteristics of Karme Choling is being contemplative center, which will be the basic life force, but things surrounded by the contemplative practice alone would be some sort of Shambhala vision. I think we don't have to particularly trying to be polite or beating the bush in this community. Everybody's friends and members of the sangha, we can afford to point out things very straightforward to individuals. So there will be some genuineness taking place, which is one of the very precious thing that we have, otherwise it takes a lot of energy and unnecessary diplomacy.\r\n\r\n\r\nSPEAKER6: It's been said that the only way you can really correct a fault in another person, is to not have that fault yourself.\r\n\r\n\r\nTRUNGPA RINPOCHE: That will be very hard.
