In 1970, when Trungpa Rinpoche was still living in Scotland, two faculty members from the University of Colorado sent him an invitation to teach at the University of Colorado. They included a postcard of the Rocky Mountains and suggested he might appreciate the similarity of Colorado to the mountains of Tibet. After many monthis, in November, 1970, he and his wife Diana accepted their invitation and arrived in Boulder, Colorado. While continuing his otherwise extensive teaching and travel schedule, Trungpa Rinpoche taught four semesters of classes at the University of Colorado, first through the Extended Studies program, and later as part of the newly formed Religious Studies Department headed by Dr. Robert Lester. Each course was a survey of the Buddhist path, blending historical context, foundational teachings, and experiential approaches, and often including extensive discussions about the spiritual scene in America. These recordings, never before available, present a unique opportunity to experience Rinpoche presenting essential dharma topics to an audience of beginners and non-Buddhists in an academic setting.
