These landmark conferences were the first public forums of Christian-Buddhist dialogue in North America. They helped usher in a new era of interreligious communication across traditions focused on contemplative practice. Participants at Naropa included some of the leading teachers and thinkers from contemplative Christian, Zen, Theravadan, and Tibetan Buddhist traditions -- including the Dalai Lama in 1997 -- and regularly drew close to 500 participants.  Seeds for the conferences were planted when Chogyam Trungpa met renowned Trappist monk and author Thomas Merton (SEVEN STORY MOUNTAIN) in India in 1968, when they envisioned collaborating on books and dialogues bringing these two great contemplative traditions together.  Although Thomas Merton died suddenly shortly thereafter, Chogyam Trungpa never forgot their idea, and the first Christian-Buddhist Conference was held at Naropa in 1981.  The talks in this series are addresses Chogyam Trungpa gave at the conferences, with subjects ranging from the divergences and meeting points between theistic and nontheistic traditions; meditation and mindfulness; the three-yana Buddhist approach; and Buddhist ideas of enlightenment. Also included are two dialogues between Chogyam Trungpa and faculty members.
