Series: Public Seminar: Devotional Buddhism of Tibet (7 talks, 1973, Boulder, Audio)

A seven-talk series on devotion in Tibetan Buddhism, specifically clarifying how it functions in hinayana, mahayana, and vajrayana. Presented in easily relatable but also subtle contexts, subjects include working with duality in the teacher-student relationship; the idea of surrendering; examining devotion critically; and devotion as sympathy to oneself, openness toward the teacher. Spiritual friend is a parent in hinayana, physician in mahayana, and "absolute warrior" in vajrayana, who never gives up on you. Devotion is presented as an important bridge toward experiencing reality as it is. This seminar became the basis for the five chapters in the "Devotion" section of the now-classic book THE MYTH OF FREEDOM.
