Series: Public Seminar: Tibetan Buddhism and American Karma (10 talks, 1971, Boulder, Audio)

An early, wide-ranging seminar on nuts and bolts of American karma, with insights that still have relevance today. Topics include how America's embrace of spirituality was reflection of American karma even as people tried to escape it; pitfalls of bringing ambition, aggression, and materialism to one's spiritual project. Embrace of spirituality nonetheless a landmark in human history. Other topics: how karma arises; the antidotes to American karma; meditation as developing wisdom and skillful means. American education, alternative lifestyles also discussed, as are overlaps between spirituality, philosophy, and science. The city as ideal training ground for compassion and nowness. A thematic throughline is need to engage with one's country's karma, not reject it.
